Three birthdays today: former Capitals Fred Weaver and Dick Kowcinak, and Racer Gary Bredin.
Fred Weaver: Left wing who played a partial season for the Capitals in 1942-43. It was his second pro season, and like many hockey players, he would play no more games until after WWII, when he resurfaced in the lower-level minor leagues and senior leagues through 1958. A native of Saskatoon, Sask., he was born in 1924.
Dick Kowcinak: Left wing who played two wartime years for the Capitals from 1943-45. He had 28 goals and 47 assists in 84 games in Indy. He played one more season in the AHL for St. Louis in 1945-46, and then four more years in the new IHL, where he was the leading scorer twice, in 1948 and 1950, and league MVP when he tallied 83 points for Sarnia in 1950. He retired and remained in Sarnia after the 1951 season. He is a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. A native of Winnipeg, he was born in 1917. He passed away in 2011.
Gary Bredin: Right wing who played 10 games for the Racers in their inaugural 1974-75 season. He had three goals and two assists. He would play 144 WHA games between 1974-76, with 26 goals and 57 points, finishing 1974-75 with the Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades franchise, and playing for the San Diego Mariners and Denver Spurs/Ottawa Civics in 1975-76.
