Mid-week link roundup

So much has happened in the last few days, it was time for another roundup. Here, Indiana Ice memorabilia is headed for the Hockey Hall of Fame, USA Hockey looks to curb fighting, the ECHL recaps the Kelly Cup Final, the Blackhawks sign Swedish forward Dennis Rasmussen, a handful of proposed and enacted NHL rule changes (which would likely filter down to the ECHL, which, as one of two official developmental leagues for the NHL, adopts a similar rulebook), and NBC follows Doc Emrick around for a day.

Ice defeat U18s, extend streak to 11 + roster moves

Led by Daniil Tarasov's two goals and a goal and an assist from Tyler Pham, the Ice extended their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games (and their winning streak to six straight) with a 4-3 victory over the U.S. National Team Development Program U18 squad Friday at the Pepsi Coliseum.

For Tarasov, his two-goal game gave him 20 goals for the year, second-best in the USHL behind Lincoln's Kevin Roy (26). With 42 points, Tarasov is also second to Roy in that category.

Pham's night marked his second two-point game of his young USHL career. He also had a goal and an assist on Dec. 17 against Chicago, a 6-2 Ice victory. The team's top pick in the 2011 USHL Entry Draft, Pham now has two goals and five assists.

Christian Hilbrich -- fresh off his commitment to Cornell -- also scored a goal for the Ice, who built a 4-1 lead with three second-period goals.

Team USA started the scoring just 96 seconds in, on a goal by highly-touted defenseman Jacob Truba. Tarasov tied the game with 2:28 left in the period on the power play -- the Ice were 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

Things exploded in the second. Pham scored unassisted just 44 seconds in to give the Ice the lead. Tarasov buried a feed from Robert Polosello just 1:08 later. Then, a minute after the USA switched goaltenders, Pham and Drew Smolcynski set up Hilbrich's game-winner at 13:42 of the second.

The Ice's three goals came on just six shots. Starter Collin Olson allowed three goals on 15 shots, but only stopped two of the four shots he faced in the period. Backup Jared Rutledge came in midway through the period and allowed Hilbrich's game-winner a minute later. He would stop nine of 10.

It became the game-winner because Team USA's Miles Koules scored with 2:41 left in the second, and Matthew Lane scored with 2:38 left in the third. Trouba assisted on both goals.

Jon Gillies made 31 saves for the Ice.

The Ice are now 20-7-4 as they begin the second half of the season, and remain seven points back of first-place Green Bay. They are off until next weekend, when they visit Chicago on Friday and Dubuque on Saturday.

Roster notes: Sean Kuraly returned to the lineup tonight after missing both games last weekend. He was scoreless and a minus-1. Jose Delgadillo, acquired earlier in the week from Sioux City in exchange for Alexander Kuqali, made his Ice debut. ... He wore No. 2 and was a plus-1. ... Ryan Cole has been dealt to Amarillo in the Tier II NAHL. Cole had been acquired from Lincoln earlier in the season for future considerations and had two goals and two assists in 10 games. ... The Ice have also added Russian forward Kirill Lebedev to the roster. He will wear number 91. He is from Magnitogorsk, Russia, and is currently 20, so he is in his lone year of USHL eligibility.

Three stars
1. Daniil Tarasov (Ice), 2 goals, 6 shots, +2
2. Tyler Pham (Ice), goal, assist, 2 shots, +2
3. Ryan Obuchowski (Ice), assist, +2

Ferlin among last cuts on WJC team

Former Indiana Ice forward Brian Ferlin skated with Team USA in the World Junior Championships exhibition games, but was one of the last cuts to the 22-man roster for the tournament, which will begin Dec. 26 in Edmonton and Calgary.

There are 17 USHL alumni on the 22-man roster: Two of the three goaltenders -- Jack Campbell and Andy Iles -- were teammates on the USNDTP U18 team. Defensemen Adam Clendening, Derek Forbort, Stephen Johns, Jon Merrill, Jarred Tinordi and Jacob Trouba, as well as forwards Bill Arnold, Austin Czarnik, J.T. Miller, Brandon Saad and Jason Zucker were also USNDTP alumni.

Other USHL alums on the team are defenseman Kevin Gravel (Sioux City) and forwards Connor Brickley (Des Moines), Kyle Rau (Sioux Falls) and T.J. Tynan (Des Moines). In addition, Czarnik played a year for Green Bay in 2010-11 after his year with the USNDTP.

Trouba is the one current USHL player on the roster.

The USA team is coached by former Fargo Force coach Dean Blais. USA Hockey's GM is former Indianapolis Ice player Jim Johannsen.

Ferlin, a freshman at Cornell University, has five goals and seven assists in 11 games so far this season. He is also a +10. His being left off Team USA does allow the Jacksonville native to play with Cornell in the Florida College Classic in his home state Dec. 29-30. Ferlin was drafted by the Boston Bruins this past spring.

Ferlin on USA Hockey WJC preliminary roster

USA Hockey announced its preliminary roster for the World Junior Championships, which begin Dec. 26.

Former Ice player and Boston Bruins draft pick Brian Ferlin is among the 28 players chosen for the preliminary roster.

Ferlin, who played for the Ice from 2009-11, is currently a freshman at Cornell, where he was the ECAC Player of the Month for November. He, along with Dubuque's John Gaudreau and the Ice's Blake Coleman, were the top American-born scorers in the USHL last year. Ferlin and Gaudreau are both on the roster.

A lot of familiar faces dot the roster, as 20 players on the USA team have USHL experience.

The team will be coached by former Fargo Force coach (and current Nebraska-Omaha coach) Dean Blais. Former Indianapolis Ice player Jim Johannsen is the general manager.

USA wins bronze in Junior A Challenge

The United States won the bronze medal in the World Junior A Challenge Saturday night, beating Sweden 3-0 in Langley, B.C.

The Ice's Sean Kuraly -- who came into the night tied for the tournament scoring lead -- assisted on Mario Lucia's first-period goal that turned out to be the game-winner.

Kuraly finished the five tournament games with three goals and two assists. Austin Cangelosi and Tony Camaranesi also scored for the United States, a team made up of USHL players. Canada East and Canada West will play for the gold Sunday.

These players will return to their USHL teams next week after wearing the red, white and blue of their country.

Kuraly, Team USA fall in WJAC semis

The United States fell 4-2 to Canada East in the World Junior A Challenge semifinals Friday in Langley, B.C.

The Ice's Sean Kuraly had an assist in the game, feeding Green Bay's Andy Welinski for a goal in the third period that cut the Canadians' lead to 3-2, but Canada East added another goal.

With three goals and an assist, Kuraly and teammate Mario Lucia are tied for the scoring lead in the entire tournament.

The United States will play Sweden at 10:30 p.m. Saturday for the bronze medal. The two Canadian teams will face each other for the gold Sunday afternoon.

3-0! Ice win 7-4

The Indiana Ice are now 3-0 on the young USHL season after a weekend sweep of the US National Team Development Program U17 team in Ann Arbor.

Tonight, the offense exploded for seven goals in a 7-4 victory over the U17 national team.

Midway through the second, the Ice trailed 3-2 -- briefly -- in a wild 84 seconds of action. Cody Bradley gave the Ice a 2-1 lead, but back-to-back USA goals by Tyler Kelleher and Anthony Louis just 35 seconds apart made it 3-2 USA.

But just 18 seconds after Louis' goal, Jacob Fallon knotted the game back up at 3 and set off a run of five consecutive ice goals to pull away. Drew Smolczynski assisted on Fallon's goal, which came with 10:54 left in the second. Robert Polosello scored his third goal of the year on assists from Bradley and Christian Hilbrich with 7:24 left in the second, and the Ice had the lead for good .

Alexander Kuqali -- on the PP -- Sean Kuraly and Dan Sherer scored goals 2:48 apart in the third period, giving the Ice a 7-3 edge with 11:59 left in the game.

Bradley had two assists to go with his goal for a three-point night. Polosello, Robert Gawron and Kuraly all had a goal and an assist each. Daniil Tarasov had two assists and now has six points in three games. Polosello and Bradley's goals gave them a team-high three for the season in three games. Tarasov -- the USHL's goal-scoring leader last year -- leads the Ice with four assists.

Gawron's goal and assist were his first USHL points. He scored the Ice's first goal at 15:03 of the first. Defenseman R.J. Boyd had his first assist as an Ice player -- he played with the Chicago Steel for part of the season last year. Alex Barron was a team-best +3.

Goaltender Dalton Izyk made his USHL debut and stopped 24 shots to get the victory. Curtis Frye stopped 18 shots for USA. The Ice outshot the national team 28-25.

The Ice power play was 1-for-4. So was Team USA's. At 6-of-13, the Ice's power play is the USHL's best. It'll get a shot at the big 210x90 Pepsi Coliseum ice surface next week.

Lots of parallels in this game. Kelleher -- who had two goals and an assist over the weekend -- was the Ice's fifth-round pick in the futures draft this year. The player from Deerfield Academy decided to take the USNDTP invite rather than the Ice's. Also, new USNDTP U17 coach Danton Cole is a familiar face. He played for the IHL Indianapolis Ice in 1995-96. Fallon briefly played college hockey across town at the University of Michigan before returning to the Ice this season.

The Ice, Green Bay and Waterloo are the only unbeaten teams in the USHL through two weekends of play. The Ice and GB are 3-0, Waterloo is 2-0. On a per-game basis, the Ice are also the second-highest scoring team in the USHL with 16 goals in three games -- an average of 5.3 gpg. Team USA has 19 goals, but has done so in four games, scoring 4.75 per game.

The Ice and the USA U17 team will play again next Saturday, Oct. 15, in the Ice's home opener at the Pepsi Coliseum.

Three stars
1. Cody Bradley, Ice: 1 goal, 2 assists, +2, 2 shots
2. Robert Polosello, Ice: 1 goal, 1 assist, +2, 2 shots
3. Hudson Fasching, USA, 1 goal, 1 assist, +1, 2 shots

Tonight's game: Ice vs. USA U17

The Ice and the USNDTP U17s play the middle game of their three-game, two-week set tonight in Ann Arbor after Cody Bradley scored twice to give the Ice a 5-3 victory over the U17s Friday night. They'll play again at the Pepsi Coliseum in the Ice's home opener next Saturday. The U17 team has a couple of familiar faces -- or names. Leading scorer Tyler Kelleher was drafted by the Ice earlier this year but opted to join the national team development program instead. New head coach Danton Cole is a former Indianapolis Ice player, suiting up for 32 games in 1995-96. Loaded with offensive talent, the Ice have been big on the power play, going 3-for-5 last night and a whopping 5-for-9 for the year -- and that's without the benefit of the enormous Pepsi Coliseum ice surface, which the Ice will return to next week to open the season. It's possible we'll see Dalton Izyk make his USHL debut for the Ice for the first time this season tonight. Hunter Miska played goal for the national team last night, expect to see Curtis Frye get the call tonight. He had 40 saves in an OT loss to Chicago last week.

USA Hockey week concludes

The USA U17 team defeated Switzerland 5-1 Sunday to sweep the Five Nations Tournament. The United States won all four games. Adam Erne was scoreless in the final game, but had two goals, an assist and four PIMs in the tournament.

In the WJC evaluation camp, Brian Ferlin was scoreless in the final game, a 6-4 loss to Sweden. He had a strong camp, with four points, including an assist in two games with the full USA squad.

Ferlin "just produces," Gillies backs up tourney

Ice goaltender Jon Gillies had a strong finish to the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, stopping 21 shots as the US U18 national select team defeated the Czech Republic 3-1 in the fifth place game Friday. The U.S. won three of its four games, but finished fifth because both of its pool play wins came in overtime, which carries a lower point value than regulation wins. Gillies was the goaltender of record in all four games, posting a 3.94 GAA and an 87.6 save percentage. He had the second-best GAA and save percentage among goalies that played at least 100 minutes. He also was second in the tournament in minutes played. Boxscore.

Catching up from yesterday, Brian Ferlin had another assist for Team USA as it beat Finland 4-1 in the World Junior Championships evaluation camp. He has a goal and three assists in the camp. The New England Hockey Journal's junior hockey/draft expert Kirk Luedeke tweeted that Ferlin has "looked nothing but solid" since being drafted by the Bruins in June. The U.S. faces Sweden at 1 p.m. Saturday to round out the tournament. Box for Finland game.

Tonight, Adam Erne was scoreless but the USA U17 team beat Slovakia 6-4 in the Five Nations Tournament. The U.S., which is unbeaten in the tournament, finishes at 7 p.m. Saturday against Switzerland.

Gillies backstops win, Ferlin makes roster cut

Jon Gillies backstopped a 5-4 USA victory over Russia in the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament this morning. The Ice goaltender stopped 27 of 31 shots, keeping the U.S. in the game and allowing the Americans to win on an overtime goal. The U.S. is now 1-1 in the tournament, and plays Slovakia at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Game boxscore.

Former Ice forward Brian Ferlin made the roster cutdown for the World Junior Championship camp, and will play in the camp's final games. Ferlin had a goal and two assists in the first two games. He is one of 17 forwards on the USA squad. The team also has nine defensemen and three goaltenders, and so the 29-man roster will be further cut down later.

Adam Erne had a goal and an assist for the USA U17 team in a 5-1 win over the Czech Republic. It was its Five Nations Tournament opener. Erne scored the game's first goal 1:04 into the game on an assist from Gabe Gurtler, and had the first assist on Gurtler's goal at 7:30 that made it 3-0.

The USHL & NCAA's place in junior hockey

A big point of contention this summer has been about the three Canadian Hockey League junior circuits poaching American players -- whether they be USHL players or NCAA commits. Given the number of players that develop in the USHL and then matriculate to the NCAA, this hits a lot of familiar faces -- and also creates a ripple effect. The University of Michigan has lost two goaltenders in late summer. Paul Kelly of College Hockey, Inc. has some pretty pointed comments in the Boston Globe.

Among them: "I’m a believer that when you make a commitment, you stand by it and honor it. ... When kids make a commitment, particularly when that commitment takes a more formal form in a letter of intent to attend that school, then you break that commitment, frankly, if I’m an NHL GM, it might cause me some concern.

Ice players on scoresheet today

The players with Ice representing the USA have all seen plenty of action today.

In the WJC camp, Brian Ferlin had a goal and an assist as Team USA White beat Finland 5-3 in Lake Placid. Ferlin assisted on Kenny Agostino's goal to open the game at 9:17 of the first period, and then scored on a feed from Agostino at 6:30 of the second, tying the game at 3-3. Ferlin now has a goal and two assists in two games. Ferlin is headed to Cornell University this fall, and was drafted by the Boston Bruins in June. The two teams will be cut down into one by Wednesday, when the Americans will face Sweden.

At the U18 level, Jon Gillies backstopped the USA in its first game in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, but the Americans lost to Finland 6-3. Gillies stopped 33 of the 38 shots he faced. The game was tied 3-3 after a period, but the Finns added a power-play goal in the last minute of the second to take the lead, and another midway through the third. A late empty-netter sealed the score. The USA faces Russia at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

At the U17 level, the USA beat the Czech Republic 3-1 in an exhibition prior to the Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor. Adam Erne, who played for the Ice last season, had the first assist on Gabe Gurtler's second-period goal that set the final score. The teams will play again in the tournament's opening game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Other Ice-related news
Maine-based junior hockey blogger Nate Fournier posted today an item on Ice Futures Draft pick Anthony Florentino. He turned down an invite to the USNDTP U17 team. He did not attend the team's main camp in June, and it appears he'll return to the Eastern Junior Hockey League this fall. He is a 1995 birth.

Ice & the USA

Saturday marked the first day of competition for the United States for a couple of Ice players.

Jon Gillies played goal for the USA in the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament exhibition game. The United States defeated the Czech Republic 5-3. Gillies played half the game, stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced. Calvin Peterson came in and played the final 28 minutes. Box and story here.

In the World Junior Championships evaluation camp, Brian Ferlin had an assist in the Team USA Blue vs. White scrimmage Saturday. He had the second assist on Chase Balisy's third-period goal for the white team, which lost 4-3. Boxscore here. Ferlin was scoreless in today's game, a 4-2 win for the white team he was suiting up with. Box here. Next up: vs. Finland, 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Adam Erne and the U17 team gets underway Tuesday in the Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.

One more for Monday: Emrick named to USHHOF

The United States Hockey Hall of Fame announced its next class this year, and a Hoosier was among the inductees.

Broadcaster Mike Emrick, who has been the voice of the NHL on national television for several years, first from 1986-88 on ESPN, then from 1995-2000 on Fox, and again from 2005-present on NBC. He also has been the television Voice of the New Jersey Devils from 1993-2011, and prior to that was the Philadelphia Flyers' TV voice from 1998-93. Emrick has been honored by the NHL (Lester Patrick Trophy), the Hockey Hall of Fame (Foster Hewitt Award) and recently won an Emmy award for his play-by-play.

Emrick is a native of LaFontaine, Indiana, celebrating his 65th birthday today. He graduated from Manchester College and also has graduate degrees from nearby Miami University and Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He began broadcasting in 1973 with the IHL's Port Huron Flags.

He joins former USHL player Gary Suter, Chris Chelios (whose two sons have played in the USHL), Keith Tkachuk and Flyers owner Ed Snider in this year's class. The USHHOF is based in Eveleth, Minn.

Other inductees with Indianapolis/Indiana ties are Dave Christian (2001, former Ice player), Cliff "Fido" Purpur (1974, former Capitals player),

The induction ceremony will take place this fall in Chicago.

Monday's news: Erne (to Quebec?), Gillies to rep USA next week

Two Ice players from last season are representing their country this week, as Adam Erne and Jon Gillies are donning the red, white and blue for two junior tournaments.

Note the words chosen. Both players have been drafted -- and courted -- by QMJHL teams. Both had committed to Boston-area colleges -- Erne to Boston University, Gillies to Northeastern. But it appears Erne has been headed to the QMJHL since his rights were traded to the Quebec Remparts, who paid quite a lot to get them. While currently unconfirmed, a Twitter post from Maine-based junior hockey blogger Nathan Fournier bears that out today ("I've been told Adam Erne will report to the Quebec Remparts"). He was expected to give a decision by today. We will try to confirm with the Ice.

Gillies appears to be staying with the Ice and heading the NCAA route. He'll likely be one of the USHL's top netminders this season after posting a strong year splitting time with Casey DeSmith last season.

Gillies is headed overseas to play for the United States' U18 team in the annual Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. The event is heavily-scouted as it's the first major event for hockey players in their draft year. The games will begin to count next week, as the United States will play Finland on Monday, Aug. 8 (8 a.m. EDT), Russia on Tuesday, Aug. 9 (8 a.m. EDT), Slovakia on Wednesday, Aug. 10 (11:30 a.m. EDT). The semis and finals of the eight-nation tournament will be played Aug. 12-13.

Erne will represent the USA in the Five Nations Tournament next week in Ann Arbor, Mich. Play begins Aug. 9 when the U.S. faces the Czech Republic at 7 p.m. The next day, the U.S. will face Germany at 7 p.m. A game against Slovakia will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 12, and finally against Switzerland the following day.

Gillies preparing for Ivan Hlinka tourney

Ice goaltender Jon Gillies is getting ready to head overseas and represent the United States in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

His hometown newspaper, the Portland (ME) Press-Herald, had a nice piece on him today.

Gillies to play for USA

Ice goaltender Jon Gillies will play for the Team USA U18 Select team in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
The tournament, which will be played Aug. 8-13 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, is one of the top U18 events in the world.

Gillies holds the franchise record for scoreless streak (182:04) and consecutive wins (10). He went 15-6-2 last season with a 2.82 GAA, primarily as Casey DeSmith's backup.

The full roster is here. A handful of other players from 2010-11 USHL rosters are also on the roster -- defenseman Ian Brady (Cedar Rapids) and Justin Wade (Fargo) and forwards Vincent Hinostroza (Waterloo), Jordan Masters (Muskegon) and Brendan Silk (USNDTP U17).

Also, Ice teammate Adam Erne was picked for the U17 Select Team, which will play in the Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. in early August. Erne had 10 goals and eight assists for the Ice last year.

Ice players who have participated in the Ivan Hlinka tournament:
2011: Jon Gillies (G)
2010: Sean Kuraly (F)
2009: Brian Ferlin (F)
2008: Shane Berschbach (F)

Ferlin to USA World Junior camp

Ice forward Brian Ferlin and the Youngstown Phantoms' Scott Mayfield have been invited to the US National Team's evaluation camp.

From the camp, the World Junior Championships team will be selected. The camp will feature 44 players vying for a spot in one of the game's most coveted tournaments.

Ferlin, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., played for the Ice the last two seasons. He was the Boston Bruins' third-round selection this year.

The camp will take place Aug. 6-13 in Lake Placid, NY. The WJC will be in Calgary this year, from Dec. 26-Jan. 5.

Erne selected to U17 select team

Ice forward Adam Erne has been picked by the USA Hockey U-17 select team to play in the Five Nations Tournament Aug. 9-13 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Erne, considered to be one of the most talented 1995-born players in the country, was the USHL's youngest player last season. He was one of four 1995 births in the USHL last year. Three are on the U17 select team's roster.

Erne is one of 22 players to be selected. Other USHL players are Cedar Rapids defenseman Anthony DeAngelo and Chicago Steel forward Michael Turner.

The team will be coached by former NHL player Bob Corkum.
