The Des Moines Buccaneers ended the Indiana Ice's two-game win streak Friday night with a 4-3 victory over the Ice in Des Moines.
Des Moines scored three goals in 5:04 of the second period to turn a 2-1 Ice lead into a 4-2 deficit, and the Bucs were able to hold off an Ice charge in the third. The Bucs peppered Ice netminder Dalton Izyk with 27 shots in that game-turning second period, outshooting the Ice 27-7 in the frame and 47-40 for the game.
Each team had two power play goals as special teams factored in largely. The Ice were 2-for-6 on the power play, the Bucs 2-for-7. The Ice had four third-period power plays in a comeback attempt -- including a 6-on-3 in the final 23 seconds as Des Moines had two in the penalty box and Izyk was pulled for the extra attacker.
Anthony Greco and Gaspar Kopitar scored at even strength at 10:14 and 13:23 of the second, with Justin Hussar getting the first assist on each goal. Hussar also scored on the power play in the first period to tie the game at 1-1. Luke Voltin -- who started the year with the USNTDP -- scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 15:18.
Defenseman Ryan Obuchowski scored twice for the Ice, both on the power play. He got the scoring started at 11:57 of the first, and then tried to get the Ice back into it with a shot at 8:19 of the third. Jacob Fallon had the first assist on both goals. Robert Polosello also scored for the Ice at 5:00 of the second from Christian Hilbrich.
At 25-11-5, the Ice are in a second-place tie with defending Clark Cup champ Dubuque in the USHL Eastern Conference. Green Bay (68 points) has a 13-point lead on the division. The Dragons' road trip will continue Saturday night with a game at Omaha.
Next weekend will feature back-to-back nights in Muskegon. The next home game will be March 9 vs. Youngstown.

Friday notes: Bob Ferguson, Brian Ferlin
The Des Moines Register has a great piece on former Indianapolis Ice coach Bob Ferguson. "Fergie" led the Ice to a division title in 1997.
Fergie coached the Des Moines Buccaneers before his stint with the Ice.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette previews the Gamblers' two games against the Ice this weekend.
Also, a Twitter post noted Brian Ferlin adds to his honors as the national college hockey player of the month for November. Ferlin played for the Ice from 2009-11 and currently is a freshman at Cornell. Ferlin is also a Boston Bruins draft pick.

Ice win Fall Classic opener
Sean Kuraly scored 29 seconds into overtime today to give the Ice a 2-1 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers in the Ice's USHL Fall Classic opener.
The annual four-day preseason tournament showcases all 16 USHL teams. The Ice continue play at 11 a.m. Friday against Waterloo, and at 11 a.m. Saturday against Sioux Falls.
Today, Robbie Baillargeon assisted on Kuraly's overtime tally that gave the Ice a victory on the opening shift of the sudden-death extra session.
In the first period, Emil Romig got the ice on the board with a power play goal on Anthony Spencer's assist with 1:07 left in the stanza.. Des Moines answered halfway through the second on a goal by Cameron Yarwood -- which came 55 seconds after Dalton Izyk came into the game in relief of Jon Gillies. As it worked out, that would be the only goal given up. Izyk stopped 13 shots and got the victory. Gillies stopped all 16 he faced.
Kuraly skated with Baillargeon and Daniil Tarasov in the OT period.
The Ice outshot Des Moines 36-30, including 3-0 in OT.
The special teams got a lot of work. The PP was 1-for-7. The PK was 9-for-9.

After the Fall Classic, the Ice open the season Oct. 1 at Cedar Rapids. They will open the home portion of their schedule Oct. 15 against the U17 USNDTP squad. The Ice will also play two games against the U17s in Ann Arbor the previous weekend.

Blashill to Red Wings

Blashill, the Indiana Ice coach/GM from 2008-10 who won a championship the first year, has been hired as a Detroit Red Wings assistant coach today. He spent the 2010-11 season at Western Michigan University, where he led the team to its first winning season in nine years and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 15 years.
In a statement released by Western Michigan, Blashill said “Today is a very emotional day for me. I am extremely excited for the opportunity to pursue a lifelong dream to coach in the NHL with the best organization in sports; the Detroit Red Wings. However, it is with extreme sadness that I step down as head coach of the Western Michigan Bronco hockey team. WMU is an extremely special place with special attributes. I am certain that with the commitment the university is making to hockey, that Bronco hockey will continue on its current path of becoming an elite program nationally. My goal when I became head coach was to bring the program to national prominence and I am totally convinced that will happen very soon, regardless of my leaving.”

Before entering coaching in 1999 at his alma mater, Ferris State, Blashill also played three years in the USHL for the Des Moines Buccaneers. His coach in Des Moines was Bob Ferguson, who would later coach the Indianapolis Ice in the IHL.
While with the Ice, Blashill coached NHL draft picks Anthony Bitetto, Nic Dowd, Nick Mattson, Blake Coleman, Brian Ferlin, Stanislav Galiev, Mike Cichy, Brent Gwidt and Brett Bennett.

Ice fall in back end of weekend
The Indiana Ice's seven-game winning streak was thwarted Saturday by the Des Moines Buccaneers by a 5-3 score at the Pepsi Coliseum.
The five goals allowed by the Ice were almost the same total as allowed in the previous seven games, in which they outscored their foes 34-6.
Des Moines' Mitch Cain scored the game-winner with 9:34 to go, breaking a 3-all tie. He would add an empty-netter in the closing seconds to register a hat trick. Dajon Mingo -- Des Moines' leading goal scorer -- also scored twice, and bumped his season total to 22.
The Ice started off well, as Daniil Tarasov scored just 3:37 in off an assist from Brian Ferlin. It extended scoring streaks for both -- Tarasov now has a point in four straight games, Ferlin seven. Mingo tied the game four and a half minutes later, but Ryan Obuchowski gave the Ice a 2-1 edge in the closing two minutes of the first period. Obuchowski has been red-hot of late, scoring his third goal in four games. He has four goals on the season.
Cain (2:08) and Mingo (13:34) scored second-period goals to put the Bucs up 3-2. Sean Kuraly tallied his fifth of the year off a feed from David Johnstone just 59 seconds into the third to knot it, but Cain finished off the hat trick.
Both teams' PK units were sharp again, as the Ice were 0-for-3 on the PP, Des Moines 0-2.
Casey DeSmith made 40 saves in the loss for the Ice, who were outshot 44-25 by a desperate Des Moines team fighting for a playoff spot. With 56 points, the Bucs remain two points back of Sioux City for the sixth and final spot in the Western Conference.
The Ice (35-17-4) finished their home schedule with a 19-9-2 record, including 18-8-2 at the Coliseum. They remain in third in the East, six points back of second-place Green Bay with four games to play. Should the Gamblers gain two points in any of their remaining four games -- or first-place Cedar Rapids notch one point in its remaining six -- the Ice will clinch third place and host the first-round playoff series with the sixth-place team in the East. It will likely be either Youngstown or Waterloo, both of which have 47 points.

The beat goes on
The Ice kept rolling, posting a 3-0 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday night at the Pepsi Coliseum for their seventh straight victory.
Goaltender Jon Gillies posted his second straight shutout -- and set a club record for consecutive scoreless minutes. Gillies hasn't allowed a goal in 164:22 -- going back to the first period of a March 5 game against Green Bay. He shut out the Gamblers in the final two periods of that game, shut out Chicago 7-0 on March 11 and then made 31 saves to blank the Bucs tonight.
The Ice defense kept the lanes clear, and the Ice peppered the Buccaneer net with shots -- getting 40 on goal. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals 2:03 apart in the first period on goals from Daniil Tarasov -- his 32nd, second-best in the USHL -- and Peter Schneider.
Tarasov's goal came on a rush started up the left side by Brian Ferlin, who fired an initial shot that was blockered aside by Des Moines' Michael Shibrowski. Ferlin scooped up the rebound, looped behind the net and fed Tarasov with a goalmouth pass that was fired into a mostly-open net. Ferlin's assist extended his point streak to six consecutive games. It was Tarasov's third straight game with a point.
Schneider made it 2-0 at the 15:58 mark of the first with a tip of Ryan Obuchowski's shot from the point, deflecting it past Shibrowski for his 29th goal of the season.
Obuchowski added an empty-net goal with 1:11 to go in the game.
Des Moines launched several salvos at the net -- putting 16 shots on Gillies in the second period -- but couldn't get the puck past him. The Ice killed off all four Buc power plays. Des Moines' PK unit was also perfect on five man-advantage situations.
Will Aide also won the one fight of the night -- landing several rights before taking down Des Moines' Dan DeSalvo in a long bout late in the first period.
The two teams will have a rematch at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Pepsi Coliseum. It will be the Ice's final home game of the season.

The Ice have kept rolling, and this is a game where special teams will be important, as the Ice have the league's second-best power play and Des Moines has the league's second-worst PK. The Ice's offense has been hitting on all cylinders lately, scoring nearly four goals per game, but lately, they've tallied 5.3 goals per game in their six-game winning streak. They exploded for five -- including three in the third period -- in Wednesday's win over Muskegon. The Ice have clinched third in the East and are five points back of second-place Cedar Rapids and six back of first-place Green Bay. Both the Ice and GB have six games left, CR has eight. Des Moines is fighting for its postseason life, as the Bucs are tied with Sioux Falls for the final playoff spot in the West.
