2007: The NHL Entry Draft takes place in Columbus, and four future Ice players hear their names. Brett Bruneteau goes in the fourth round to Washington, Ben Blood in the fourth round to Ottawa, Paul Carey in the fifth round to Colorado and Scott Darling in the sixth round to Phoenix. All four would play for the Ice in the 2007-08 season.

This date in Indianapolis hockey history: April 24
Today's entry sees the Indianapolis Ice win an epic 1-0 game to oust Cincinnati in 1999, Jim Malwitz and Neal Coulter score two goals each to lift the Checkers to a playoff win in 1985, the Checkers completing a sweep of Wichita in 1982, and Jim Park posting a playoff shutout in 1976. Also, birthday celebrations for Joe West, Doug Weiss, Craig Channell, Jeff Jackson, Frederic Barbeau, Drew Smolcynski and the late Thain Simon and Jack Douglas.

1996: Ravil Gusmanov posts a five-point night, tallying two goals and three assists in a 6-2 Ice win over Detroit at MSA. Sergei Klimovich has a goal and two assists, Kip Miller adds two assists.
1991: Dan Vincelette and Trevor Dam score 26 seconds apart in the second period, helping lift the Ice to a 5-4 win over Fort Wayne. The two goals made it a 4-2 contest. After the Komets tie it, Owen Lessard scores with 2:32 left in the second to give the Ice the win.
1981: Rob Holland and Salt Lake's Rick Heinz post a goaltending dual, but Heinz wins it and blanks the Checkers 2-0 in Salt Lake City. A name that would become familiar to Indy fans -- Red Laurence -- scores the game-winner for the Golden Eagles. A year later, Holland would again lose a 2-0 decision in Salt Lake.
1980: Richard Brodeur posts his fourth shutout of the regular season -- and the Checkers' sixth -- in a 5-0 blanking of the Dallas Black Hawks. Brodeur and Jim Park would share the CHL's Terry Sawchuk Trophy as the top goaltenders in the league. Garth MacGuigan scores the game-winner.
1976: Market Square Arena registers its first sellout, as the Racers fall to the New England Whalers 5-2 in the regular season home finale.

Bob Lakso: Member of the Indianapolis Checkers throughout their three years in the IHL, and would rejoin the Ice in their inaugural year of 1988-89. In those four seasons, he played 295 games, tallying 144 goals and 156 assists. He had a 40-goal season in 1985-86 (41-35-76), and a 94-point season in 1986-87 (39 goals, 55 assists). He had at least 26 goals in each of his four seasons in Indianapolis. He would leave Indy and play four years with the Fort Wayne Komets, posting a career-best 100-point season in 1989-90 in Fort Wayne. A native of Aurora, Minnesota, Bob is 52.
Aaron Smith: Played four games with the Ice in the CHL in 2003-04, picking up two penalty minutes. It was the first of two years he would play professionally, with five teams in the CHL and ECHL. In 61 games, he scored three goals and added 10 assists. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, he is 35.

2014: Scott Conway scores the first four-goal game in Indiana Ice history, as the Ice explode for five second-period goals in a 9-1 victory over Dubuque. Conway adds an assist for a five-point game. Teammate Dwyer Tschantz also has a five-point night (G, 4A), while Jacob Pritchard has a goal and three assists.
2008: Gregory Squires tallies two goals and an assist, while John Kemp assists on three goals as the Ice beat the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets 4-3 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Scott Darling stops 38 shots for the division champion Ice.
2005: The Ice's first USHL regular season ends with a 5-3 loss at Waterloo despite two assists from Jeremy Tejchma.
2000: The Ice complete their first CHL season with a 39-28-3 record and a 6-5 loss to Topeka. Yvan Corbin and Chris MacKenzie combine for a CHL-high 127 points. Corbin tallies his 62nd goal, MacKenzie his 47th.
1997: The Ice hold off a late Houston rally to beat the Aeros 4-3 in a shootout. Andy MacIntyre, Chris Snell and Brad Werenka all score in the shootout. Steve Dubinsky scores twice in the regulation - the latter being his 30th goal - with Rob Conn and Brad Werenka each assisting on two. It?s the first division title since the 1990 Turner Cup championship team.
1994: Rob Cimetta has the game-tying goal and three assists in regulation, then scores the game-winner in the shootout as the Ice beat Las Vegas 6-5 on the road. Christian Soucy comes off cold off the bench and stuffs all five Thunder attempts in the shootout. Rob Conn scores two first-period goals and adds an assist.
1993: Brad Lauer tallies three goals and an assist in a 9-3 Ice rout of Phoenix. Sean Williams adds three assists, as does Alexander Andrievski who scores his 25th goal 23 seconds in. Rob Brown has four assists. For Lauer, it's goals 44, 45 and 46 on the year. Rob Conn also scores twice.
1986: Rob Holland backstops a 7-4 Checkers win over Peoria at Market Square Arena. Earl Ingarfield scores the game-winner for the home team.
1983: The Checkers close out a successful 1982-83 regular season with an 8-2 thumping of the Birmingham South Stars. Kelly Hrudey backstops the win, and Dave Simpson scores the game-winner at the Coliseum. The Checkers finish 50-28-2
1976: The Racers clinch their first playoff spot with a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Toros at Maple Leaf Gardens, backstopped by goaltender Jim Park.
1942: The Capitals put themselves on the verge of the city's first hockey championship. They beat beat Hershey 2-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-5 Calder Cup Finals series. Jack Keating scored the game-winning goal and Joe Turner stopped all but one shot for the Caps.

Grant Blakey: Forward who played 52 games for the Ice on the 2008-09 Clark Cup championship team. He tallied nine points in those 52 games, but had three goals and two assists in nine postseason contests on the way to the championship. He recently completed his collegiate career at Mercyhurst, where he tallied 37 goals and 69 assists in 146 games over four years. A native of Canton, Michigan, he is 25.

Jim Park: Racers goaltender from 1975-78, and a Checkers goaltender their first two years. He teamed with Michel Dion, Andy Brown and Paul Hoganson to form a strong netminding presence for the Racers in their heyday, as they won the 1976 division title and won a playoff series in 1977. He came up from the minors in the 1975-76 season and posted a 6-4-0 record. He also played in six games in the seven-game playoff series against the New England Whalers, and was the winning goaltender for the Racers in all three of their victories, posting a 2.46 GAA in the playoffs and two shutouts. He had a 2.41 GAA during the regular season. He played 31 games in 1976-77, going 14-12-4 with a 3.96 GAA and one shutout. He played 12 games the following season. All told, he posted a 23-23-4 record with the Racers and a 3.70 career GAA. When the Checkers were formed in 1979, he and Richard Brodeur formed the first goaltending tandem that season. Park played 43 games for the Checkers -- 37 in 1979-80, six the following year -- posting a 19-17-3 mark and a 3.25 GAA. Shortly after retiring in 1982, Park opened a goaltending school in Toronto, which is now in its 27th summer of operation. A native of Toronto, Park is 59.
Eric Kattelus: Winger who had 18 goals and 21 assists for the Ice in 2006-07. He went on from the Ice to play four years at Michigan Tech, where he scored six goals. He finished out this past season professionally with the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones. A native of Houghton, Michigan, he is 24.
