Ferlin among last cuts on WJC team

Former Indiana Ice forward Brian Ferlin skated with Team USA in the World Junior Championships exhibition games, but was one of the last cuts to the 22-man roster for the tournament, which will begin Dec. 26 in Edmonton and Calgary.

There are 17 USHL alumni on the 22-man roster: Two of the three goaltenders -- Jack Campbell and Andy Iles -- were teammates on the USNDTP U18 team. Defensemen Adam Clendening, Derek Forbort, Stephen Johns, Jon Merrill, Jarred Tinordi and Jacob Trouba, as well as forwards Bill Arnold, Austin Czarnik, J.T. Miller, Brandon Saad and Jason Zucker were also USNDTP alumni.

Other USHL alums on the team are defenseman Kevin Gravel (Sioux City) and forwards Connor Brickley (Des Moines), Kyle Rau (Sioux Falls) and T.J. Tynan (Des Moines). In addition, Czarnik played a year for Green Bay in 2010-11 after his year with the USNDTP.

Trouba is the one current USHL player on the roster.

The USA team is coached by former Fargo Force coach Dean Blais. USA Hockey's GM is former Indianapolis Ice player Jim Johannsen.

Ferlin, a freshman at Cornell University, has five goals and seven assists in 11 games so far this season. He is also a +10. His being left off Team USA does allow the Jacksonville native to play with Cornell in the Florida College Classic in his home state Dec. 29-30. Ferlin was drafted by the Boston Bruins this past spring.
