Ice beat Sioux Falls 4-1

The Indiana Ice began a big 3-game weekend by beating the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-1 Friday at Pepsi Coliseum.

Tonight, the Christian Hilbrich-Dan Sherer-Andrew Mayer line connected for two goals, while newcomer Ryan Cole scored his first goal in three games as an Iceman.

Daniil Tarasov and Sean Kuraly each registered points in their third consecutive games as they connected for a third-period goal that put things away. Tarasov's assist was the 100th point in his USHL career.

Jon Gillies stopped 33 of 34 Sioux Falls shots in net.

Hilbrich broke the ice at 8:17 of the first, but Sioux Falls' Dan Carlson answered less than two minutes later, sending the teams into the intermission tied 1-1. Captain Alex Barron scored the eventual game-winner with 6:16 left in the second period, on assists from Hilbrich and Mayer. On the Ice's second power play of the night, Cole scored on assists from Alexander Kuqali and Barron with 2:01 left in the period to make it 3-1.

Barron and Hilbrich each had a goal and an assist. Hilbrich's line was all a +2, Barron and defense partner Ryan Obuchowski were both +3.

Kuraly's insurance goal -- his ninth of the year -- came with 3:34 left in the game.

The Ice improved to 11-5-2 with the victory, but remained in fourth place, inching to within one point of third-place Youngstown. With 24 points, they're five back of Green Bay, but can cut into the Gamblers' lead the next two days, as Green Bay visits the Coliseum for a 7 p.m. faceoff Saturday and a 3 p.m. faceoff Sunday. Defending Clark Cup champion Dubuque concludes the seven-game homestand with a visit next weekend.

Ice perfect in Fall Classic

The Indiana Ice finished the USHL Fall Classic with a 5-2 victory over Sioux Falls today, meaning they finish the four-day event with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Ice went 4-2 in the six preseason games over the last three weeks. In the Fall Classic, they outscored teams 13-7 over three days.

Today, the Ice never trailed, as Daniil Tarasov and Sean Kuraly both had huge days. Both had a goal and three assists in the victory.

Dalton Izyk made 26 saves in the victory, going the distance in goal.

The Ice also killed off a five-minute major in the third period while nursing a 2-0 lead.

It became 2-0 on the strength of two second-period goals. Woody Hudson opened the scoring on assists from Tarasov and Kuraly at 7:01 of the period. Four minutes and a second later, Tarasov fed Robbie Baillargeon to make it 2-0.

Sioux Falls cut the lead to one twice in the third, but each time, the Ice answered. Kuraly scored on assists from Barron and Tarasov just 61 seconds after the Stampede's first goal to make it 3-1 with 12:42 left. Sioux Falls scored less than a minute and a half later, but Tarasov and Robert Polosello scored goals in the final minutes -- both assisted by Kuraly.

Kuraly was a +5, Tarasov and Barron were both +4. Baillargeon was +3, as was defenseman Matthew Krug.

The Ice were 0-for-4 with the man advantage, but a perfect 7-for-7 on the PK.

The season opens Saturday in Cedar Rapids.

Preseason leaders for the Ice (only 4 games -- the first preseason game at Chicago was not entered into Pointstreak):
Scoring: Sean Kuraly 3-3-6, Robert Polosello 3-2-5, Daniil Tarasov 2-3-5, Obuchowski/Baillargeon/Fallon 3 points each.

Ice win again

Daniil Tarasov continued his hot streak, Blake Coleman and Sean Kuraly both had two-point nights and Ryan Obuchowski scored yet again in a 6-4 Ice victory over Sioux Falls Friday night. It was the Ice's eighth win in nine outings.

Tarasov scored twice -- extending his scoring streak to eight -- including a power-play goal late in the first that gave the Ice a 2-0 lead. He added an empty-netter later.

The Ice built leads of 4-1 and 5-2, with defenseman Brandon Russo scoring in the first before Tarasov's goal. In the second, Chris Martin scored off a feed from Kuraly, and then Kuraly added a shorthanded goal moments at the 9:00 mark to make it a 4-1 game.

Obuchowski's third-period goal gave the Ice a 5-2 lead, and was his fourth in five games. He has five goals on the season.

The USHL's scoring leader, Coleman now has a five-game scoring streak going, as he had assists on both of Tarasov's goals.

Jon Gillies made 44 saves in the victory.

The Ice travel to Fargo Saturday night. ... Coleman leads the USHL now with 84 points (30-54-84) and a +50 plus/minus rating, while Tarasov leads the USHL in goals (35) and is a +32. Defenseman Nick Mattson, a Chicago Blackhawks draftee, has a +31.

Three stars:
1. Ryan Jacobson (SF), 2 goals
2. Dominic Zombo (SF), 1 goal, 4 shots, +2
3. Ryan Obuchowski (Ice), game-winning goal, +3

The Ice saw their winning streak snapped by Des Moines on Saturday in the home finale, but they've played pretty well on the road all season. This features two of the three most prolific offenses in the USHL, even though the Ice have the league's most dangerous line of Daniil Tarasov-Blake Coleman-Brian Ferlin and the Stampede have more balance -- no 20-goal scorers, and nobody with more than 41 points. These two are among the league's hottest teams. Sioux Falls has won four of its last five, outscoring teams 20-5 in that stretch. In their seven-game winning streak, the Ice had outscored their foes 34-6. Ferlin has a seven-game point streak going. Tarasov has scored in four straight games for the Ice. The Ice will most likely finish third in the USHL's East Division. They've clinched at least third, but are six points back of second with four games to play.

The Ice conclude weekend play Saturday at Fargo (32-21-4)
